I came across a post: THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
which was posted sometime ago and I only found tonight. I wish I had found it sooner , but for whatever reason, it happened today. The post is about The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was drawn up by the UN - 60 years ago!
The declaration is a fascinating piece of work, carefully scripted to ensure the rights of all human beings. Not unlike our Declaration of Independence, it assures us of our inalienable right, to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights. . ." (yeah, I got it from wikipedia)
When was the last time any of us read our Constitution or the Declaration of Independence? Other than a few chosen phrases, do any of really know what these documents say? I know I don't!
Now, here is a fairly recent document : The Universal Declaration of Human Rights ( only 60 years old) and I have to ask - HOW MANY PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT THIS? I DIDN'T!
I'll bet more people know about the PATRIOT ACT and how it VIOLATES our rights , than they do any other document listed here.
So here we have all these politicians, supposedly working in OUR best interest, on our behalf, but we know nothing about our laws - why is that?
I urge each and everyone reading this post to atleast glance over these documents ( and any others you may find useful) and think about how you would rewrite the Declaration of Independence. What inalienable rights should people be entitled to? What would you do to protect those rights? Who would those rights apply to?
Everyone has opinion about SOMETHING - voice it here and now.
Should we close our borders?
Should English be the national language?
Should euthanaisa be legalized?
Should abortion be outlawed?
Should parents be informed of a teen's abortion?
What should the LEGAL age be?
Should the government do away with welfare/social services? What should be done in its place?
How should child support be handled?
How should we protect our citizens?
Should eminent domain be banned?
Should citizens have the right to carry weapons? or should they be used by the military and police only? Should the police use weapons at all? Why not use rubber bullets or other technology?
What drugs (if any) should be legalized or banned ?
What should we use in place of foreign oil?
How should we protect our natural resources for future generations?
Should the medical field be more tightly regulated than it is? HOW?
Which government agencies should we dismantle? Which should we keep?
How long should a senators/congressman's term be? What benefits should they be entitled to?
These are just some of the questions I can think of off the top of my head. I know this post is off topic for many people, and I really would like to hear your thoughts. But the point is people complain about so much and they do nothing. This may not be a chance to change that, but it will give you, me and everyone else a chance to realize that we may not be alone in how we feel or think. WE are NOT alone in our struggle. As you can see around you, there are people who face hurdles everday, some make it, some don't. But the fact of the matter is we are all here together, for a short time. Make the most of it. Leave your impression for the next generation. Who knows? They may pick up where we left off.
